Take My Hand By Nicola Haken

Take My Hand

Twenty-four year old Dexter Michaels has arrived in the UK for a fresh start - leaving everything and everyone he knows behind in the states. Determined to put right some of the wrongs he'll never be able to forgive himself for making and make his Aunt Sarah - the only person left who still believes in him - proud, he lands in London with the intention of working hard, getting his degree and keeping himself to himself. He can't destroy anybody else that way...
His heart and his body have other ideas however when he finds himself sitting next to nineteen year old Emily Barton in his Psychology class. Moving down south to find her own New Life, Emily is shy, smart and beautiful - everything Dexter knows he should stay away from... everything he knows would be too easy for him to break.
But she makes him feel things he'd forgotten even existed. She makes him laugh, smile, care... forget. Without her trying, and without him realizing, Emily has wound her way into the one place he swore to keep locked away forever - his heart. But can she stay there when she discovers the dark past he's so determined to keep hidden from her? Or will he destroy her too, just like he always expected?

This book had me in stitches. Literally. Snickers aka Rachel had me laughing the most. Her potty mouth and attitude was hilarious. Knowing how a wheel chair can impact your life i liked how Rachel lived, not caring what people saw past the chair. She said what she thought and never blinked an eye lid and how rude or insensitive she was too others around her. Sometimes i did wonder how Rachel and Emily became friends then managed to stay friends. I felt like Rachel pushed her too much to do something she clearly wasn't comfortable doing. Even with that said as you read into the book you can see why they have managed to stay friends. It is one of those friendships where they balance each other out. One wild and Nuts, whilst Emily is calm and collected.

Which brings me to Dexter and his bloody ridiculous names for ''types of women' i couldn't help but laugh. Marshmallow, m&m and tootsie pops. Seriously? Sweets. In a way though as mad as it sounds the explanations seem accurate. Believably so.... which is where his new species in Rachel comes from. 'Snickers' because, well she is nuts.

Sometimes i found myself getting frustrated with Emily and wish she would just scream what she really wanted to say. She was so shy and always sketchy about what was going to come out of her mouth. I really loved her character.
At the beginning Emily dates Jared and even not really getting to know the characters that well from then, even i could tell he belonged more with Rachel. They both had the same sense of humor and both have that out look on life. You know the saying Y.O.L.O, they had it down to a T.
Emily and Dexter were so much of the opposites yet they were both the same in the sense they like being alone, They like keeping themselves to themselves and both closed off to people who aren't even remotely close to them. Dexter is supposedly a bad boy alpha male but i don't see him coming across that way. Yes i agree he is another male whore but he has his reasons that you can't help but feel sorry for him.
The book tackles drug and alcohol addiction. I Have known someone with an alcohol addiction and to me Dexter didn't really seem to have a problem with it. He drank a few times during the book and never once craved any after the slip up. Towards the end of the book it mentions him needing something to help him get through the day. It was never mentioned again after that and the book ended from Emily's POV so i am hoping he isn't going to let it consume him again.

This novel is completely believable and could actually be based on true events. This is what made me enjoy the book more. Although it wasn't the most exciting novel i have read i enjoy it, needless to say.
