Fighting for Irish By Gina L Maxwell

Former MMA fighter Aiden "Irish" O'Brien hasn't stepped into the ring since he accidentally took someone's life in the heat of rage. When his friend calls in a favor that sends him south to check on family, Irish figures he's got nothing to lose. His life is on the ropes. The least he can do is make sure the sexy redhead is safe.

Kat MacGregor has forty-eight hours to settle the twenty thousand dollar debt her deadbeat ex-boyfriend owes a crime boss. If she doesn't, she'll pay for it--with her life. Kat's halfway out the door when a sexy new guy walks into the bar and insists he's there to help.

Irish is forced to fight in the underground MMA circuit to win the money she needs. But he's been lying to Kat. About who he is, about knowing her sister, about why he comes home bruised every night. She's the best thing that's ever happened to him, but breaking her trust will cost him the most important fight of his life: the one for her heart. Read on for my review >>>

Fighting for Irish is not your typical MMA novel. I found the first 60% of the novel hard to get into. To be honest it was more with the fact i felt like it skipped parts us novel readers enjoy. The getting to know you stage.
I also found parts of the book mislead you.
  1. The woman who comforted the kitten i was lead to believe was the woman he supposedly killed. This was not true, it was in fact his sister.
  2. Then speaking of his sister/s i was lead to believe he hadn't talked to them in five years, or something along them lines but then when Kat went to his house and needed a change of clothes he had a spare pair of his sisters trousers there. Weird.
  3. The story tells us Kat has no sexual experience with men, only men who gave her no choice. What i didn't understand was the whole mess Kat was in was because of her long term boyfriend. Did she not have sexual relationship with him or did he force her too? This is what confused me because the writer makes it clear what Kat and Irish have is special and so unique to her. Some things just made the story unbelievable.
  4. I also found the story lagged a lot in the beginning but found my self giving it a chance anyway. It wasn't really till the ending the disappointment really kicked in. The whole novel has huge potential. Kat get's took towards the end, so that Irish can lose the fight in a weeks time. What the writer misses to tell is what actually happened in the time she was took. All through the book it was told between both Kat and Irish POV. So when the only part in the book doesn't go to her it was quite the disappointment.
All that said the book was pretty amazing story. A bit dark in places but it was raw and real. The writer didn't hold back on Kat's abuse as a child and it was heartbreaking to read. Every time i read a novel where some child or adult is abused or hurt breaks my heart to be honest and although i am only reading a novel, it still happens to millions of people out there.

Kat and Irish story is passionate and raw and i even found myself laughing a few times through the book. I read good things about this novel and obviously i am missing something other people are obviously seeing.
I don't think the book was bad i actually thought the plot was amazingly written. I just felt like it missed some vital points.

One thing i hate is giving bad reviews. I really do because i know author's put in so much time and so much work to make there finish piece. I wouldn't feel right if i didn't give an honest review.

I have read a few readers have give up on the book 40% into it. I strongly suggest you give the book a chance and stick it out.

  1. My suggestion is that it would be more constructive if you sent your comments to this author privately and remove this review for now, focusing on other works. I would suggest she work on rewriting some areas and then send it to you again. The magic of Kindle publishing is you can do that within a week or two. In my early days of novel writing, a got a review about character development. It was a quick fix, and then the book got good reviews. I just didn't let these things get me down.

To the author I say don't let this be discouraging. You can improve it, get busy, rewrite, upload and try again. Maybe Lisa will give you another review :)

Anyway, I help authors with Kindle publishing. I don't do critique novels because it is so painful to my client. I work mostly on non fiction, which are so fixable. But many fiction authros seek my help with keywords, etc. My blog is at kindleselltips.blogspot.com

Keep your chin up Gina. Just the fact that you had the perseverance and courage to write a book, means you are on the right path.

  3. The author didn't ask me to review the novel it was just on my tbr list. I liked the story plot don't get me wrong i think it was amazing. Just the points above which to me aren't anything major, just confusing.
I hope no one take's my review as a bad one just an honest one.
I agree she is a talented writer, none of my review was about her writing just misunderstandings at the beginning of the book. Thank you for your comment :)

  4. I am sure you meant well, but the review is bad and would turn away readers when they search for her name on Google. And this review will be permanent, so even if she improves the book, people will find it. So I would say, it is not constructive due to the permanency of blog entries. I have found books of mine still being listed 14 years later. Google indexes everything. I just thought the author might get discouraged. Maybe if you told her this on a private basis, you might get the assignment to help her out, who knows. Turn a negative into a positive.
